The fate of about 600 police officers most of who are from the General Service Unit (GSU) pursuing various courses in local colleges and universities hangs in the balance as police Commissioner Mathew Iteere ordered them out of class citing shortage of servicemen.
The affected officers are however not prepared to abandon books with ease. In protest over their chief’s decision to put a full stop into their studies, they have written to both President Kibaki and Prime Minister Odinga asking the two coalition principals to tame Iteere because he does not want academic progress within the forces under his watch.
“Some officers have been sent far away from Nairobi which makes it difficult for them to continue with their studies,” the protest letter said in part.
An officer attached to Kinyago Police Post in Dandora who is also pursuing a course in Accounting at a neighbouring college swore that he will not give up his studies saying he is prepared to let go the job if that is the price he has to pay for his education. “To be very honest I joined police force as a stepping stone, otherwise I’m aiming higher,” said the officer who asked us to identify him only as John.
