Two-Year Ban on Exam Cheats Collapsed

BY Benard Adera
Education minister Sam Ongeri has said “to hell with the stringent rule that seeks to ban those found guilty of exam cheating from seating the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) exams until after a period of not less than two years has elapsed.”
In a ministerial statement to parliament on Wednesday 24, Ongeri reported that he had instructed the (Knec) to look for other measures to deal with the matter and withdraw the ban immediately.
In a legal notice signed by the education minister who surprised many with his dramatic about-turn on Wednesday, Knec had proposed a ban of at least two years on those found guilty of exam cheat from seating the council’s exam.
Also in the proposal was a fine of Kshs. 100,000 on a candidate found copying the council’s exam or a year jail term or even both as may be decided in a court of law.
But the entire above proposals aimed at limiting examination irregularities have been washed away by the stroke of a paragraph read to parliament by the education minister. In more than one way, Prof. Ongeri’s action has breath live into examination cheating. There appears now, as it was in the past to be too much room for error.
